How to Choose Cables for ADAS Camera Systems: 7 Critical Requirements

1. Why ADAS Camera Cable Standards Matter

An ADAS camera is a safety-critical component. If the cable to a front-facing camera fails, the automatic emergency braking (AEB) system is blind. If the cable to a surround-view camera degrades, the driver sees artifacts during parking — a minor annoyance with major liability implications if it contributes to a collision.

Unlike infotainment cables where a bit error means a dropped audio packet, ADAS camera cables must deliver zero bit errors for 10+ years across temperature extremes, vibration, and chemical exposure. The 7 requirements below ensure that your cable specification meets this bar.

The key decision is compressed vs uncompressed. Most production ADAS systems compress video in the camera module before transmission. This dramatically reduces bandwidth requirements — 4K at 30fps drops from 600 Mbps to ~60 Mbps with H.265 compression. However, compression adds latency (typically 10-30 ms) and requires a codec in the camera module, increasing cost and power consumption.

3. Requirement 2: EMC and Shielding — The #1 Field Failure Cause

ADAS camera cables run through the vehicle body, often within centimeters of electric power steering motors, ABS pump motors, and high-current battery cables. These generate broadband electromagnetic interference from DC to hundreds of MHz.

The cable must provide dual-layer shielding:

  • Inner layer: Aluminum-laminated polyester foil with 100% coverage — blocks high-frequency electric field interference
  • Outer layer: Tinned copper braid with ≥ 85% coverage — provides low-impedance return path for low-frequency magnetic field interference
  • Termination: 360° shield contact at both connector ends. A "pigtail" shield drain wire (common in low-cost cables) creates a slot antenna at high frequencies — avoid this entirely.

CISPR 25 Class 5 is commonly referenced as a target for automotive EMC validation. Shielding and 360° termination are commonly required in many ADAS camera cable designs, but the final EMC requirement and test plan must follow the OEM specification and validation procedure.

The front grille camera (used for AEB and adaptive cruise control) has the harshest thermal environment — it sits behind the grille, exposed to engine heat and ram air. Always specify ETFE or XLETFE insulation for any cable routed through the engine bay.

5. Requirement 4: IP Rating for Exterior Cameras

Any camera mounted outside the vehicle body (grille, bumper, side mirrors, tailgate) requires sealed connectors. The minimum rating is IP67 (dust-tight + immersion to 1 m for 30 min). For under-body or wheel-arch cameras exposed to high-pressure wash, specify IP69K.

Both FAKRA and Mini FAKRA offer sealed variants (Code Z — water blue housing with integrated sealing ring). H-MTD sealed variants are in development; if waterproof H-MTD is required, verify availability with your connector supplier before committing to the design.

6. Requirement 5: Cable Length and Signal Integrity

The maximum cable length for automotive Ethernet is defined by the PHY standard:

  • 100BASE-T1: 15 meters (UTP or STP)
  • 1000BASE-T1: 15 meters (UTP) or 40 meters (STP)
  • MultiGBASE-T1 (2.5/5/10G): 15 meters (STP only)

In a typical passenger vehicle, 15 meters is sufficient for most camera runs. However, in commercial vehicles (buses, trucks) where the rear camera may be 20+ meters from the ECU, 1000BASE-T1 with STP is the only viable Ethernet option — or the link must use a non-Ethernet SerDes (FPD-Link / GMSL) with a dedicated coax cable.

  • Camera requires power over same cable: HSD (video on Pair 1, power on Pair 2)
  • >1 Gbps per camera, future-proof: H-MTD 1-pair

Do not accept a supplier's claim of "tested to these standards" without seeing the actual test reports. A proper test report identifies the test lab, the specific assembly tested (with part numbers), the test conditions, and the pass/fail results.

9. Real Project Example: 4-Camera Surround-View System

Requirements: 4 × 1080p 30fps cameras (compressed or processed camera links), ECU in the passenger footwell.

Calculated bandwidth: 4 × 99.5 Mbps = 398 Mbps aggregate. Fits within 4 × 100BASE-T1 links.

Connector choice: Mini FAKRA 4-channel at the ECU. One connector carries all 4 camera feeds. Each camera module uses a 1-channel Mini FAKRA.

Cable: Dacar 302 coax (50 Ω), XLPE jacket. Temperature rating: -40°C to +105°C (sufficient for bumper and mirror locations; front grille camera uses Dacar 302 with ETFE jacket for +125°C rating).

IP rating: Front grille camera: Mini FAKRA sealed (IP67). Side mirror cameras: Mini FAKRA sealed (IP67). Rear camera: Mini FAKRA sealed (IP67). All interior connections: unsealed.

Cable lengths: Front camera: 2.5 m. Rear camera: 4.5 m. Left camera: 1.8 m. Right camera: 2.2 m. All within the 15 m UTP limit for 100BASE-T1.
